Speaker: Mary Shields

Born Mary Theresa Bonasso in Fairmont, WV, Mary Shields was one of the nine children in her family.  She credits her Catholic education and the example of her parents in planting seeds of a solid foundation of faith in her heart.  When she was only 19, it was her participation in a Life in the Spirit Seminarthat produced in her a desire to grow in relationship with Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.  She credits this life changing experience as the catapult that put her on a faith journey that continually leads her to an ever deeper and more fulfilling relationship with Jesus.  Through the years, this growing faith has sustained her.   When her son was only 15 months old, the Holy Spirit revealed to her a vision that, when she acted upon it, saved him from death. Iwas a miracle of healing that changed her whole perspective on what is truly important in life.   God also gave Mary a heart for the youth and a gift for teaching.  Her involvement in the TEC movement imprinted the truth of the Paschal Mystery on her heart. Over the years, Mary has taught CCD and Confirmation in her Parish and religion at St. Mary’s Catholic School.   Through these years of service, the Lord opened the door for her to get a Masters in Guidance and Counseling so she could teach in the public schools. Today she serves as a Eucharistic Minister, is a member of the Perpetual Daughter’s Women’s group in her parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Stonewood and helps lead a home-based bible study with a group of nearly 25 women.  She loves her vocation as a guidance counselor at Bridgeport MiddleSchool. Mary and her husband John have been married for 42 years, and have 5 children and 13 grandchildren.  Come andhear the beautiful story of Mary’s yes to God.
