God’s faithful and
enduring love is the recurrent theme that runs through Irene Carubia’s
witness.
A native New Yorker,
Irene was educated in Catholic schools and lived in Brooklyn as a teenager, where she met, Bob, her husband of 45 years. As urban dwellers, they felt
graced with God’s love early in their marriage, and then in faith, moved from
“the city” to the country and a life of chickens, goats and four wheel drive
access in rural West Virginia.
As a young married
woman, during the changes of Vatican II, her faith waned until the Holy
Spirit re-enlivened it in a small country church in Purslgove, WV. Then Irene and her husband opened their hearts to God’s love and were abundantly blessed with seven adopted children
fulfilling their desire for a large family. God’s blessings continued to follow them as they raised their
children. They now have teenage
grandchildren and care for Bob’s mom who lives with them.
Volunteer service
has been an integral part of Irene’s life. For many years, she taught religious education at St. Mary’s in Star City, provided office service at the Good
Counsel Friary and she initiated the St. Ursula Food Pantry in Pursglove and
the rural Core Community Center. She
is a frequent communion minister to the hospitalized, leads the Light of Life prayer group and
numerous retreats, sponsors RCIA and may be most recognized as the “voice of
Catholic radio” here in WV.
