Speaker: Father Jim O'Connor
Father Jim O’Connor, one of three brothers, originally from
Wellsburg, WV, was raised in the Catholic faith by his Methodist
mother and his Catholic father.
In 1969 Fr. Jim began a four-year enlistment in the USAF, where he
became a North Vietnamese linguist and crew member of
reconnaissance missions over Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
After the USAF, Fr. Jim attended West Virginia University,
graduating with a B.A. in Philosophy, became a Francis brother of the
Sacred Heart Province of the Third Order Regular Of St. Francis of
Assisi, was assistant director of the Christian Conference office at
Franciscan University, received a Masters of Divinity from St.
Michael’s College of the Toronto School of Theology of the University
of Toronto, Ontario CA.
Over his thirty-seven years of priesthood, Father Jim has been
privileged to minister in parishes in Pittsburgh, Westover, Madison,
Whitesville, Chapmanville, South Charleston, Grafton, Philippi,
including his present assignments of Coalton and Elkins. For six years,
he also pastored the Marshall Catholic Community overseeing the
operation of the Newman Center.
As a musician/Christian songwriter/vocalist, Father Jim has
traveled to more than a hundred United States Catholic churches, and
has given musical presentations for the US Army in Germany, Florida,
Hawaii, Egypt and South Korea.
Fr. Jim attributes his ministry and vocation to a pivotal moment
when, after Vietnam, in 1973, he returned home to attend WVU, and
experienced a life-changing spiritual conversion, through the power of
the Holy Spirit, at Good Counsel Friary.
There have been many obstacles, twists and turns to Father Jim’s
spiritual journey which he will share at the Magnificat Breakfast in
